CHICAGOLAND ROTARY VETERANS COAT DRIVE
STAND DOWN DAY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17
Our goal is to collect and distribute 900 winter coats to Homeless Veterans in the Chicago area. Stand Down Day is a special day for homeless veterans in which they receive support from many health, social service, and community support organizations. The Chicago event is organized and staffed by volunteers from veteran organizations, community and social service organizations, and Hines VA and Jesse Brown VA.
This will be Rotary’s sixth year participating in the event that has been held and organized for the past 21 years by the veterans. We expect to serve a little over 1,000 homeless veterans on November 17 as they gear up for the harsh winter months ahead. If you have not been to a Stand Down Day, we set up the coats along clothing racks organized by size and assist the veterans in selecting a coat and helping them try them on. The veterans then get winter clothing, social service support for housing and food, haircuts, and a warm meal.
How Can YOU Help serve our veterans as they have served us?
- New or Clean and Gently Used Men’s Winter Coats in sizes L, XL, XXL , XXXL, XXXXL
The coats are needed in the larger sizes as the veterans layer their clothing for the winter.
Due to many resources being diverted to veterans in flood areas and National Guard and Reserve Units, we will not be receiving any coats from VA.
- Volunteer on November 16 (Set Up) and 17 (Stand Down Day) at Humboldt Park Armory in Chicago
1551 N. Kedzie Avenue, Chicago, IL 60651
We have two shifts available on November 17 from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and one shift on November 16 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. Sign up for volunteering by going to www.rotarydistrict6450.org and click on Calendar on the left hand side of the page and go to November 16 or 17. We will contact you one week before the event with additional volunteer information.
