Happy New Rotary Year, District 6450!

I am honored to step into the role of District Governor this year. I want to thank Chuck Corrigan for his leadership in this past year where we met and conquered challenges none of us could expect - and came out stronger as a result. Our district led the way in projects and proved that we are truly People of Action. I know that with our clubs returning to more in-person meetings and events, we will embody the theme RI President Shekhar Mehta has for this year of Serve to Change Lives.

One of our own, Past District Governor and Rotary International Director-Elect Pat Merryweather-Arges is featured in this month’s Rotary Magazine for her work as a patient advocate. Pat has been instrumental this past year as our district’s COVID-19 advisor and on the RI COVID-19 task force and she will continue to advise and support our district in that role this upcoming year. Pat has helped us navigate and advise on the changing guidelines during COVID and keeps a pulse on the status of the pandemic on a day-to-day basis. I encourage all of you to check out her feature on page 17 of the July Rotary magazine. Click here to view

It is with sadness that we start this Rotary minus one of our favorite Rotarians. JN Settles, a long-time member of the Park Forest Rotary Club and more recently the combined Chicago Heights-Park Forest Rotary Club, passed away on June 21st. JN was a great Rotarian and an incredible gentleman, and he will be greatly missed.

Finally, I want to also thank the Rotary Club of Joliet and the District Governor Installation Committee, co-chaired by Bret Mitchell and Larry Johnson, for a wonderful installation event on June 29. It was revitalizing to have Rotarians from across the district enjoying fellowship and celebration in person for the first time in over eighteen months. We all felt it was a phenomenal kickoff for the upcoming year, and I know I am looking forward to exploring the new territory of our in-person, virtual, and hybrid Rotary world.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Jane Hopkins
